About the event
This workshop uses the book, Lessons in Masterful Portrait Drawing, by Mau-Kun Yim, to guide us through the process of creating a charcoal portrait. This book was chosen out of several portrait books out there because the author’s method is quite beautiful, as well as effective. There is a lot to learn from him, not only regarding how to do a portrait, but how to make it a work of art. (It is not required for the class).
Supplies to bring:
- soft vine charcoal sticks, charcoal pencils (hard, medium and soft and extra soft: General's is a good brand),
- kneadable eraser and a white polymer eraser,
- white Conte' crayon or a white charcoal pencil,
- a pencil sharpener that can handle charcoal pencils (Staedtler 2-hole tub sharpener is good and small, but holds shavings),
- a large and small blender (tortillion).
- Bring toned paper for this, either in a sketchbook (Strathmore has a good one in sand or gray usually at Michael's) or toned (colored) watercolor paper.
We will have a 1-hour break for lunch. Bring a sack lunch, or purchase lunch from one of the restaurants downtown.
